We all put a lot of effort into our internet business. We all have the same hopes and dreams about where our internet business will go. Lets take a simple example. Listening to self declared gurus of internet marketing they all tell you the same thing. Im running a newsletter delivered daily and I send additional sales letters to pitch some of my affiliate products.

I track every email with ad tracking and click through analysis.Guess what? Nothing! Sending daily emails and sometimes an additional sales letter would trigger something, at least a wave of cancellations, dont you agree? Well, my conclusion of this mess is that over 90% of the emails never passed the SPAM filters.This is devastating. As you know most people sing up for newsletters through their free email accounts. The few who use their regular email address unsubscribe within a few days.Dont get me wrong, newsletters are great and if done right they can help you to promote your business. If you have done some serious reading about your website's optimization, you probably would have come across the reference to the phrase “optimization of anchor text”. This article discusses the definition and importance of anchor text and how you can use this powerful website optimization feature to get high ranking in search engines.

What is Anchor Text?

Anchor text is the visible hyperlinked text on the page. Let's take this example:

Here the words “SEO Case Studies” and “Search Engine Optimization” are hyper linked to the hidden URLs http://www.seorank.com/seo-casestudies.htm and http://www.seorank.com respectively. In a normally built site, anchor text is usually used to indicate the subject matter of the page that it links to. For example, the text “SEO case studies” indicates to visitors that they can expect to see content about case studies pertaining to SEO if they visit the link. This pattern of usage has been applied in search engine algorithms to enhance the relevance of the “target” or the “landing page” URL for the keywords appearing within the anchor text.

Anchor Text Enhances the Relevance of the Target Page

How to Optimize Anchor Text Within Your Site

Anchor text optimization can be deployed throughout your site to enhance the relevance of most of the web pages based on individual page content. You would be surprised, how easy it is, to find suitable instances of hyperlinking structures to make use of optimized anchor text. When linking to internal pages, it is better to hyperlink relevant keywords instead of linking unrelated common words. A common lapse is the hyperlinking of the common words like "here" instead of content related keywords. For example in the sentence:

Some people believe that submitting the site to search engines alone is sufficient in getting top-10 ranking. This is not true. Search engine submission only announces your site’s existence to search engines. To get a good search engine ranking, it is important that you carry out Title tag optimization, Meta tags optimization and anchor text optimization of your website amongst other SEO techniques.

While the above example seems like overkill, this is just to illustrate how you can accommodate your important keyword phrases by carefully rewording the text of your web pages. When soliciting external links, it is better to provide your own “cut and paste” HTML code. Webmasters like it when a ready to paste HTML code is available for them to use, to provide a link to your website.

Links from external sites help your site to gain relevance for keywords mentioned in the anchor text which boosts your site’s ranking. As the number of such inbound links increase, so will your site’s ranking in SERPs.

Anchor text therefore comes on top of the checklist in your SEO initiatives.

GET LISTED IN THE DIRECTORY FOR OPTIMUM LISTINGS!

Getting your site an optimum listing in the Open Directory (http://www.dmoz.org) is vitally important as far as search engine positioning is concerned as Google gives a lot of importance to sites being listed in the Open Directory.

In this article, we focus on how you can get your site an optimum listing in the Open Directory. Even if your site is already listed in the Open Directory, you should read this article to find out how you can get multiple listings in the Open Directory.

Before you submit your site, go through your entire site and ensure that there are no missing graphics, no links leading to empty or non-existent pages and no "Under construction" symbols. Also, check for typos and grammatical errors. Furthermore, your site must provide good content. If your site simply contains links to various affiliate programs, you will find it difficult to get through. The Open Directory does not mind sites containing links to affiliate programs, as long as you provide proper content.

You now need to select the two most important keywords for your site based on their popularity. If you don't yet know the keywords which are applicable for your site, have a look at my article on "Choosing the correct keywords for your site", available at http://www.1stSearchRanking.com/t.cgi?4901&keywords.htm In this article, I have mentioned that while selecting the keywords for your site, you should look at both the popularity of the keywords as well as their competitiveness. However, for the purpose of this article, don't worry about the competitiveness - select keywords only on the basis of popularity.

We now discuss how you should write the Title and Description of your site's listing in the Open Directory. You don't really have much choice regarding the Title as the Open Directory insists that the Title be the official name of your site. There is no way around it.

When you write the description, your aim should be to make the Open Directory editor's job as easy as possible. You should not give the editor the feeling that he/she needs to edit your description in any way. The moment an editor starts to edit your description, you risk having your keywords removed from your description.

Your description should be a single sentence which conveys what your site is all about and contains the two keywords you are targeting as close as possible to the beginning of the description. However, your description should not just be a list of keywords - the description that you use should be a proper sentence and should be grammatically correct.

Broadly, here are the rules that you should remember when forming the description:

i) Make sure that the description can tell a visitor what your site is all about. Things like "Have a look at our site" or "Welcome to my site" does not tell a visitor what your site does.

ii) Avoid hype of any sort. Avoid using ALL CAPS or exclamation marks. Phrases like "The best web site dealing with widgets!!" or "Offers the BEST QUALITY, CHEAPEST WIDGETS you can find anywhere" are inappropriate.

iii) Don't capitalize every word in your description - capitalize only the first word. Of course, if some of the words in the description are proper nouns, then you should capitalize them.

iv) Write the description in the third person. Don't say "We offer financial planning and credit counseling services", say "Offers financial planning and credit counseling services.".

v) Don't make your description too long - limit yourself to 15 words at the most. If you are lucky, you may be able to get accepted with a description longer than 15 words. However, longer the description, higher the probability that the editor will want to edit it.

vi) Check your description for typos and grammatical mistakes.

vii) End your description with a period. If the editor has to add the period to the end of your description, she may also end up editing the description, which is not what you want. Your aim is to have the editor accept the exact description that you had written in order to ensure that your keywords are not removed from the description.

Now, we come to how you can select the right category for your site. Go to the Open Directory, and search for the two keywords you have established. Does a particular category come up at the top for both the keywords? If so, go to that category, and see whether the sites present in the category are similar to yours. Also see whether that category has a Description and/or a FAQ. Read them and find out whether that category is applicable for your site. If so, this is the category you should submit your site to.

If different categories come up at the top for the two keywords, go through all the categories and find out which is the most appropriate category among the different categories.

For some keywords, you will find that the Open Directory does not display any categories. In this case, find out which category most of the top sites belong to and submit your site to that category, assuming it is applicable for your site.

Once you have selected the right category, click on the "add URL" link at the top. Type in the address of your site in the first text box, the official name of your site in the next text box, the description that you have earlier developed in the third text box and your email address in the fourth text box. Although the Open Directory says that including the email address is optional, I would recommend that you include it - if, for some reason, your site is not accepted, the Open Directory editor may want to tell you why your site has not been accepted.

What to do if your site is not accepted

After submitting your site, go to the category where you have submitted your site every day and see when your site gets listed. If you find that your site is not in that category, it may so happen that you have been placed in a different category. Type in your domain name in Open Directory's search box and see whether your site comes up in the results. I have seen some sites getting accepted within 1 day and some sites in about 2-3 weeks.

If your site has not been listed after three weeks, then re-submit it to the same category and wait for another three weeks. If your site is still not accepted, then have a look at your site again. Does it contain any missing images or links, links to empty pages or under construction signs? Does it provide good content? Does it have any spelling or grammatical errors?

If you are absolutely convinced that your site is eligible for being accepted by the Open Directory, then the fact that your site is not being accepted may signify one of two things:

i) The editor of that category is inactive, i.e. he/she has not been reviewing sites for a long time.

ii) He/she is your competitor, and does not want to list you.

In this case, the first step is to write to the editor of the category. Scroll down to the bottom of the category to which you are trying to submit your site and click on the name of the editor. If that category does not have an editor, go to the category above that in the hierarchy. For instance, suppose you are trying to submit to the Computers: Consultants: Business Systems category. At the time of writing of this article, that category did not have an editor. In this case, you should go to the Computers: Consultants category and click on one of the editors there. Click on the "Send to editorname" link, and in the Comments field, write a very polite message to the editor.

Tell her that you have been trying to submit your site to the Open Directory and you have been unsuccessful. Give her the complete details of your submission, i.e. the category to which you submitted, your URL, the Title and the Description that you used and the dates on which you submitted. Ask her as to whether there are any mistakes that you are making and whether she would be kind enough to point out the mistakes to you so that you can correct them.

If, after two weeks, you don't get any reply from the editor and are not accepted into the Open Directory, then look for another category which is applicable for your site using the method outlined earlier and submit your site to this category.

Getting Multiple Listings in the Open Directory

If you have already got your site listed in the Open Directory, you may try and get your site some additional listings in it. Begin by selecting two keywords which are different from the keywords you selected earlier. Then try and locate another category which is applicable for your site and submit your site there with a new description which contains the two new keywords you have selected.

If you are lucky, you may be able to get a listing in this new category, especially if the editor of this category is different from the editor of the category where your site is already listed. Again, if the second category to which you want to submit your site is a regional category (i.e. a category applicable to the geographical region in which your company is located), that again improves your chance of getting a second listing. Alternatively, if you were originally listed in one of the regional categories, then getting your site listed in one of the general categories is also possible, assuming that the products or services you are selling are not intended for a regional market only.

However, you have a much better chance of getting a second listing if you submit one of the internal pages of your site to a different category (assuming you can locate a category which is applicable for that particular page), rather than again submitting the home page. Submitting an internal page has the benefit that the Title no longer needs to be the official name of your site.

This allows you to include keywords in the Title. Before submitting one of the internal pages of your site, you should change the title of the page (here, by "title", I mean the Title tag of the page, i.e. the Title that is displayed at the top of the browser window when the page is opened) to the Title that you want the page to be listed under in the Open Directory. This improves the chance that the Open Directory editor will accept the title that you had submitted.

However, don't go overboard with submitting internal pages - you can be penalized for spamming. Don't start submitting any doorway pages that you have created - they will be rejected. Any internal page that you submit must provide some unique content and must be relevant to the category to which you want to submit the page.

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a new way to broadcast corporate news and structured information. RSS offers a quick, easy corporate communication channel. The RSS contents are published as a feed and the feed's content keep customers, partners and journalists abreast of corporate news and information. The RSS feeds are read using a tool referred to as a news aggregator, or an RSS reader. The aggregator periodically checks to see if the RSS feed has been updated. As the feed is updated, new information will automatically appear in the RSS reader.

While RSS was at one point only considered to be a means to deliver news headlines, RSS has quickly become a powerful medium to disseminate all kinds of information. As traditional marketers are attempting to rein in content delivery, measuring e-mail open rates, click-throughs and conversions, Internet users are fighting to gain control over the content they receive. Savvy marketers and business owners are using RSS as a way to improve corporate communication and increase their external exposure and brand appeal.

What is the enclosure tag?
RSS 2.0 is quickly becoming the definitive RSS standard, all because of its support for the enclosure tag. The enclosure tag is an optional field in the RSS 2.0 specification that allows the feed publisher to include a link to a file. The file can be just about anything. Businesses have seized the opportunity, including tutorials, streaming audio lectures, PDF proposals, Power Pointâ„¢ presentations, podcasts of sales meetings, and advertising portfolios among other traditional uses for RSS.

Many businesses have yet to realize the potential hidden in the enclosure field. The implications and power of how RSS can be used is really awe-inspiring. Consider the following business uses for RSS:

1. PDF Documents - Consider broadcasting meeting agenda notes or documentation as a PDF included with a feed, allowing interested individuals to access information without having to deal with cumbersome e-mail attachments.

2. PPT Presentations - Presentations can easily be distributed in a feed enclosure. The added benefit is that presenters using Power Pointâ„¢ will not have to lug their notebook to a meeting to present - they can manage the presentation from an iPod or similar handheld that reads RSS feeds.

3. Video - Video or streaming video are both possible via the enclosure field. Have lectures or even political debates come to life with the added video component.

4. Audio - Audio content does not mean that feeds are limited to your favorite songs. Podcasting is the coined term for audio content contained in a feed and can include language instruction, talk shows or editorials.

5. Images - Imagine realtors using the enclosure field to display photos of homes to interested buyers. Now they can carry a light-weight catalog with them to show potential buyers at a moment's notice.

6. Downloads - Consider an information technology department in a large corporation conducting proprietary software updates, including executables or zip files in the enclosure field which allow users to update the software at a convenient time.

Feedreaders are playing catch- up
RSS news aggregators were initially designed to receive text-based content. As users find outside-the-box uses for RSS, developers of RSS readers are struggling to release new versions that support the enclosures businesses are eager to use.

FeedDemon, a popular RSS reader, has recently added support for every type of enclosure in their latest release. They have created a safe list that can be customized to include specific types of file types like PDFs. This will automate downloads of files that are deemed "safe". This was clearly designed with security in mind, to prevent automatic downloading of executables.

Businesses are revolutionizing RSS as a communication medium. While some traditional businesses are struggling to include monthly newsletter summaries in an RSS feed and reap the benefits of RSS, other innovative businesses are adopting incredibly creative uses for both internal and external corporate communications.

Before posting (especially if you have not posted to a specific blog before), look to see the types and quality of posts others make regularly.

Are they long or short?

Do they contain a link to the person's website?

Is there a "signature" under their name?

** Be Polite **

It's fine to disagree with people when making a comment, whether it's the blog's author or a comment made by another reader.

It is not, however, acceptable to launch a personal attack on anyone or make nasty comments in someone else's blog.

If you feel the need to do so, do it in your own blog.

It's the same principle of you can say whatever you want in your own house, but when you're in someone else's house, you act right (and better than you do at home).

** You Can't Respond To Everyone **

If you operate a blog and someone asks a question, try to respond, but both sides should understand that you can't respond 100% of the time.

We all get busy and a blog, unless it maintains a paid membership, is often supported as a labor of love.

Before you can start any kind of online business you have to have a list! Not just any ole' list either. These are the only ways I use to build my lists. You do not have to go by them, this is what works for me. What works for me, is what I always want to teach you!

In your first email I gave you one of the most popular List Building Companies that big names use, and that is List Builder Pro. (I know Terry Dean grew his list very fast using them!) I would only use “Double or Triple Opt-In’s.”

Yes, so one of the quickest ways to build your list is “list renting.” Research shows that only 10% of lists on the market today are safe. That's 90% that are not! Yikes!

Again, like I told you in the email: A general rule of thumb is that you should only buy leads that come with the signup IP addresses and full names! At least the IP address can be used as the verification evidence that they actually signed up to receive these emails from you.

Spend 1-2 hours a day in multiple discussion boards in “your target market.” I don’t mean just “hanging around or wasting time reading posts.”

I am talking about going into each discussion board and search out the latest “threads” that you can ask a question to or answer someone's question.

You want to find a post that you feel qualified to respond to and then post a response or post a question and get out! Don’t just hang around.

The people who hang around in these discussion boards are HIGHLY TARGETED prospects for your product or service! You do have to be very careful about advertising your products or service on these boards as you could get flamed.

If you can not find a good thread to post in, get out and move on to the next one! Just make sure you leave your sig.

When people stop to read your answers to someone else's question they will see a link. If they are interested they will click on it and sign up for your ezine. This my friend is targeted traffic!

When considering a co-registration service, there are a few critical questions you must ask:

*Does the service provide only opt-in traffic? If it doesn't, move on. The more targeted the lead, the better.

*Can the new leads be automatically subscribed/added to your opt-in list? Or will the service give you a list of new subscribers that you'll need to input manually?

*If you're paying, try to avoid buying leads that have been shared too heavily with ezines that have a target market identical to yours.

*Only use those services that allow potential subscribers to read short descriptions of the ezines being offered - again, this serves to sort, target and pre-qualify the potential opt-in traffic. The closer their interests match your offered information, the better.

*Avoid those services that collect email addresses based on promotions and/or contests. These leads are not as qualified, since subscribers often opt-in only to win a prize. Their interest may be short-term, while you are looking to build a long-term, lasting customer relationship.

ALEXA BRINGS YOU TRAFFIC!

Alexa Linking Strategy:

They are on the rise again and this concept can get you linked to ANY site that does not have related links. Even I was able to convert some visitors with this strategy.

Load up Alexa toolbar. If you have not downloaded it, go DIRECTLY
to http://www.alexa.com and hit "free toolbar" on the top right corner.

Then once it is on your computer, in the alexa tool bar type in a keyword that relates to your site. Then you will see pages and pages of websites that are related to one of your keywords and similiar information of your website. Pick out 19 that "are not ranked" (or have stars by them) Copy and paste 19 of those sites in notepad so you have a record of them. Then mininmize your list.

Then open a separate window and go here:

List each of the websites you found, 19 of them and OF COURSE number 20 or number 1 is YOUR WEBSITE. So if you have more than one website with the same subject then list them also. Just make sure you have all 20 listed.

They will send you a confirmation email. Be sure to reply, then wait about ten days and you should start to see traffic! :)

A Desbian Linux Install

A Debian Linux installWarning: this post is primarily about fiddling with a new Linux install. If you don't like that sort of thing, don't bother reading further.A year and a half ago my primary desktop machine started acting strangely in Windows. The computer worked well with an ancient video card I had on hand, but crashed at random intervals with anything newer, and thus I bought a new machine to replace it. Since then the computer has lain dormant, but recently I decided that it might be fun to try out Linux (I last used Unix in college). So, after reading up on Linux for a while, I dusted off the old box and decided to try installing it this past weekend (a fun Christmas activity, I know). While I'd seen commercial installations recently, I wanted to try out a version that was completely free, yet well-entrenched, so I settled on the Debian Project's latest stable release (3.0 / "woody"). After figuring out what hardware I had (my previous install of Windows helped with this), I downloaded the latest CD images, burned them to CD, and got going.A few sources were of critical importance in helping me with the install:
Linux.org's "Getting Started with Linux" course (table of contents) provided a detailed introduction to the entire installation and configuration process.
Debian's installation manual.While doing the install I ran into a number of problems that weren't covered by the two sources above, but was able to find solutions to just about all of them online via Google. Below I've included a list of some of the larger problems I encountered, and how I solved them. (Note: I'm a Linux novice; thus if you are encountering these same problems I'd take my solutions with a very large grain of salt. For those of you experienced at Linux, I provide the following as material for you to laugh hysterically at.)
The installer didn't recognize my network card (which was an Intel Pro/10+ PCI), and I wasn't able to find that name in the modules list that the installer provided, so I continued the install without any of the optional modules, hoping that the vanilla kernel would have the right modules (bad idea). It turns out that the module for the card is EEPro100, and in order to use the network I had to use "modconf" (as root) to install the module.
Probably as a result of the first problem, my network connection wouldn't work even after installing the ethernet card module. I'm connected over a cable modem that uses DHCP; I found pump described online as a DHCP solution, so I installed the package for that (using "apt-get install", which installed it from one of the Debian CD's I'd burned), ran it (using, as root, "pump -i eth0"), and the network worked.
One of the abilities I wanted to have was to use the Linux box as a Windows file sharing and print server, and thus I set about configuring Samba. Samba was already installed (I'd selected the package option on install), so I used the Samba Howto to learn how to configure the files (primarily /etc/samba/smb.conf). Even after getting the configuration files set to what I thought was proper, I couldn't see the computer from my Windows machine. It turns out that the Samba daemons weren't started; after running both "nmbd" and "smdb" as root I was able to see the machine from Windows.
Even after I'd gotten Samba running, I still wasn't able to log in from my Windows machine. The problem was that Samba wasn't using the Linux password file, so I had to add myself as a user to Samba using the "smbpasswd" program (as root, with the -a option to add a user).
Samba and the network still wouldn't start automatically after rebooting, though; I had to manually run pump, and then the two Samba daemons to get the server to start. After reading this post I added the lines "auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp" to my "/etc/network/interfaces" file, which got the network starting automatically, but Samba still failed to start. I found out that the DHCP-client package was installed as well as pump, and was being used as the default program over pump. Since I couldn't get DHCP-client configured correctly, but pump was working properly, I uninstalled the DHCP-client package ("apt-get remove" as root), rebooted, and everything worked fine.
I also wasn't able to get SWAT (Samba's graphical configuration interface; available via http://localhost:901/) working initially, and thus I configured everything by hand. Eventually I got SWAT working by using the SWAT howto (the primary change was adding a line about SWAT to the /etc/inetd.conf file, I believe).
A concurrent problem was that X-windows also refused to start, giving me an error like "no screens found". GDM was set to act as a graphical login on boot, which was nice except that it kept running into errors and thus asking if I wanted to run a configuration program (xf86cfg?) every time I booted. The configuration program looked quite useful, except for the fact that it didn't recognize my mouse, and while they had keyboard alternatives for the mouse, none of them let me click and drag a menu item, so all I could do was quit the configuration program.
Undaunted by the lack of graphical configuration programs (this is Linux after all!), I discovered xf86config, a program that walked me through the setup of a configuration file (the proper version of which needed to be moved to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4). After this failed to yield a setup that worked (the mouse didn't function) I found this page which led me to install (using apt-get install) the "discover" "mdetect" and "read-edid" packages; of these, mdetect allowed me to determine where my mouse was connected ("/dev/psaux"), and I manually reconfigured the XF86Config-4 file to include this (in the "InputDevice" section's "Device" line).
After getting the mouse's /dev location right, it still didn't work properly; it was jumping all over the place. I have a two button mouse with a clickable scroll wheel in the center, and after much browsing (solution found in this useful manual) I figured out that the "protocol" should be set to "ImPS/2" (again in the "InputDevice" section). To get the scroll wheel to work I had to have "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" as an option in the same section.
I also figured out that "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" (as root) started an easier configuration program than xf86config. Unfortunately, I selected the option to enable frame buffering, which apparently didn't work with my old Matrox Mystique video card (which, btw, requires the mga driver), and the server wouldn't start. So, I had to comment out the "Option "UseFBDev" "true"" line to get the server to start again.
I also found that X-windows was only recognizing the lowest resolution screen resolution I included in the XF86Config-4 file; even ctrl-alt-+ / ctrl-alt-- and the quick resolution changer applet (the quickres-applet package) wouldn't change it. I believe this was caused by my listing the screen resolutions in ascending order in the configuration file ("640x480", then "800x600", etc); once they were reversed I was able to select various resolutions normally.
Only about three-quarters of the way through this configuration process did I finally learn how to shut down and restart the X-windows system without restarting the computer (gdm started automatically on startup, as I desired). To shut down gdm I now just switch to another console (e.g. "ctrl-alt-F1"; "alt-F7" returns you to the X-server) and run the command "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" as root. To restart gdm I simply run "gdm" as root. Learning this has saved me many reboots.
To upgrade my packages I used the apt-get howto to update my /etc/apt/sources.list file to include the debian http servers for the stable release, and then ran "apt-get -update" followed by "apt-get -upgrade".
All of this manual file editing was done using vi, which I had never used before (I was an emacs guy, but it wasn't installed); I found a very useful command summary here. I was also familiar with pico, but couldn't find it; apparently Debian installs nano by default, which functions identically. I'm now using nano for its relative simplicity.
At one point in the X-windows configuration process I managed to make both my mouse and keyboard non-responsive once I'd logged in graphically (preventing me from doing anything locally on the machine). From this I learned that I couldn't telnet into the Linux machine from my Windows box, but I could connect using SSH via a SSH client (I found and used PuTTY, which is free for Windows). Unfortunately, at the time I only knew of the telnet protocol (it's been a long time since I've used Unix), and thus after trying to telnet in, and failing, I did a hard-reset. If I'd used SSH to log in remotely, I could have stopped gdm and prevented a reboot. Next time I'll know better.I'm happy to report that after three days of fun-filled fiddling my new Debian Linux box is now completely up and running; in fact, I wrote this entire post using AbiWord (a free MS Word-like word processor) and Mozilla in my Gnome desktop environment.

ATLANTA -- Jennifer Elin Cole begins her mornings like many moms -- with a group cuddle followed by breakfast with her family.
But while Mollie, 5, and twins Sophie and Alan, 3, eat, Cole checks her e-mail, glances at incoming faxes and pulls up her busy FedEx Web site on the Internet. She prints shipping labels and applies them to two packages of books prepared the night before.
After helping the kids dress, Cole loads the dishwasher, piles everyone into the car and drives her children to preschool, making calls on her cellphone. She swings by a drop-off point and places her packages in the box. Cole then drives to work.
In her case, that means heading back to her home in Lawrenceville, Ga.
Like countless mothers around the country, Cole juggles the responsibilities of full-time housewife and mother with work.
But in her case, her job is based in her home -- a job she says she couldn't do without the help of the Internet. A new generation of moms who want to work but want more flexibility are using technology to set up home-based businesses.
"I don't have to choose between being home with my kids and what energizes me professionally," says Cole, a self-published author. "I can work on the time frame of parenting -- in between pouring cereal, playing Barbies, learning to read -- and the interruptions never disrupt the final project. Thanks to the Internet, my office is open all day and I'm present, even when I'm with my kids."
The number of women like Cole appears to me on the rise.
"More and more people are jumping on the bandwagon," says Cheryl Demas, who runs on online magazine for work-at-home moms. Page views on her site, which has been featured in Forbes, BusinessWeek, Family Circle and on CBS' "The Early Show," have increased from 25,000 last summer to 40,000 this year.
Lesley Spencer, who founded the National Association of Home-Based Working Moms in 1995, said her membership, sales and advertising have jumped about 60 percent since last year, and views to her Web site are up 20 percent.
"We have members from every field imaginable," Spencer says, "but the most popular jobs seem to be related to the Internet. It's flexible and it allows women to work according to their children's schedules."
Cole is convinced that the success of her latest children's book, which has sold almost 25,000 copies, is directly related to technology.
Not only did she write the story with her twin sister, Jessica Elin Hirschman, who lives in Buffalo Grove, Ill., but she also secured the printing company, which is based in China, through the Web. The two authors interviewed and negotiated a contract by e-mail with their illustrator, Bonnie Bright, who lives in California. The three viewed drafts of the illustrations on a secure Web site but have yet to meet.
"The Internet is the only way that three people in three different states, in three different time zones, could conceive, produce and publish a book cost-efficiently, in a reasonable time frame," Cole says.
Now that the book has been published, Cole tracks down wholesalers, distributors, booksellers, reviewers and individual buyers through the Web. Her current distributor is based in New Zealand.
The work-at-home trend has been increasing in the corporate world, as well.
According to a recent study conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management, 36 percent of the 459 companies surveyed offered part-time telecommuting to their employees.
Nineteen percent offered full-time telecommuting -- an increase of 2 percent from last year.
Additionally, 34 percent of the companies offered compressed work weeks, which increased 3 percent from last year.
Anandhi Bharadwaj, associate professor of information systems at Emory University's School of Business, is involved in an ongoing study of how information technology is helping to redefine the nature of jobs and organizational structures. She says this trend will only increase as technology becomes more advanced.
"There is clearly a rise in the percentage of workers who are telecommuting or teleworking," she says, terms that apply to both the self-employed and those who work for companies.
Ayana Glaze of College Park, Ga. created a virtual public relations agency after she became pregnant with her second child. After placing an ad on Google, Glaze signed a contract with a client based in Canada. More work followed. Her company, Just Write PR, began to take off.
Now Glaze, who had worked in public relations and as a software tester, now works for clients as far away as Michigan and Toronto.
"Virtual for me means global," she says. "I can work anywhere, anytime. And if we ever need to move, it's not a problem. I take my business and my clients with me."
Glaze holds meetings on the phone with potential clients.
She also networks online using special-interest groups. She holds virtual workshops and seminars by Web and teleconferencing. Designated rings and caller identification on her home telephone allow her to monitor incoming calls, which can be caught by voice mail, if the baby needs his bottle.
"There's a whole revolution out there -- the virtual revolution -- and it allows us to be home with our children," Glaze said.
Dawn Roberson of Lilburn, Ga. relies heavily on technology for her home business as a consultant for Southern Living at Home. A former financial quality control manager for IBM, Roberson now holds up to 10 home decor parties a month. She maintains a Web site and networks with clients, hostesses and fellow consultants by e-mail.
Roberson also uses a detailed "consultant's workstation" at the company's Web site to enter orders, check product status and learn about awards and other incentives for sales consultants.
Working at home isn't without its downsides. The women say they multitask like crazy and work long hours. Roberson is out of the house several evenings a week. Glaze keeps her home office open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and often works late into the evening on client projects.
And Cole says her most productive hours are between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. She sleeps just five hours a night.
Also, their income level may not be the same as it was when they were in the corporate work world.
Glaze says she earns less than when she was a software designer, but that it evens out because she spends less on work items like clothes.
"We don't want to trade being full-time mothers and enjoying our kids for fulltime work," Cole says. "We're in the middle of the pendulum between our grandmothers and mothers. It's the '50s thing and the feminist thing all at once. We've blended the two."

Global Online Systems guilty on competition charges

A multi-level marketing company CFCN warned consumers about two years ago has pleaded guilty to operating an illegal pyramid scheme.
Global Online Systems was running ads in Calgary promoting an easy way to make big money working from home.
But the company wouldn't tell people what the job was unless they bought a 45-dollar information package.
After the company was investigated by Consumer Watch, it turned out that Global Online was nothing more than a multi-level marketing company selling Herbalife products.
Consumers could make money by just selling the products, the only way to make the big money promised in the ads was to recruit more people to work underneath you.
The Competition Bureau also investigated the company and ended up laying charges.
Global Online was charged with violating the Competition Act by operating a pyramid scheme.
The Vancouver-based company and its directors, Deborah Stolz and Marilyn Thom, pleaded guilty and agreed to pay a 150-thousand dollar fine.
Pyramid schemes, which pay people for recruiting others into the group, are illegal.
The only money to be made is as if you are at the very top.
